This is a note to those who are considering the merits of the Jazz Getaway weekend from previous student of mine from NYC:
I'm a professional violist/violinist, and my husband is a beginning drummer. We told Fred that we wanted to make some music together for the first time, take a couple of Heidi style walks in the mountain air, and just enjoy a break from the crazy NYC life.
Well, it was the best vacation we have had in ten years! My husband took some off- site drum lessons, while Fred helped me hone my practice routine and set challenging, but reasonable professional goals. I had never met with such an accomplished and dedicated teacher three times in one day (for two days!!!) in my entire musical life. Between sessions with Fred, there was plenty of time for my own practice and reflection upon what we had just accomplished. I fell into a groove - an intensity of absorbtion with my own practice that I never had achieved in my years of conservatory training. Playing together with a musician who can really challenge you is always a luxury, but having that daily individual support and coaching in a schedule-free environment was a powerful inspiration. Fred is not only a killer saxophone player, but also a fine pianist, and a sensitive chamber musician. In the evenings, the three of us played music together...for hours.
It was such a great moment when David and I were able to make up some music together for the first time. We didn't want to leave! Truthfully, though, I returned to NYC, armed against its distraction, stress, and pace with so many creative compositional ideas that came directly out of the beauty of the woods in Vermont, and that peace and intense practice-discovery mode we got into with Fred. It was exciting. My husband and I play together every week now. I really just wish we had done it sooner.
Fred and Sabrina are funny, cool, relaxed, people with a rich conversational repertoire- Vermont is a beautiful place- the cabin is lovely- and no one will bother you there---all musicians (at any level) deserve to feel that productive for at least a weekend. And - maybe I'll see you at Interplay.
P.S. They didn't ask me to write this. they are probably wondering how to tell me it's too kooky for their website.
P.P.S. Remote control fireplace!
