Sonya Kitchell in Concert June 25 7:30 PM Lebanon Opera House As a teenager, singer-songwriter Sonya Kitchell's powerful, jazz inflected voice had established her as an artist to watch. Her debut album, Words Came Back to Me, garnered national attention through the Starbucks Hear Music program, and in 2007 she was asked to join jazz legend Herbie Hancock for a series of shows in conjunction with his Joni Mitchell inspired album, River: The Joni Letters. She followed that with 2008's Malcolm Burn-produced album This Storm, which featured Boston-based rock group The Slip. Kitchell returns to LOH again joined by her studio collaborator, bassist/arranger Garth Stevenson, The Brooklyn Strings (violinists Skye Steel and Dana Lyn, cellist Yoed Nir) and drummer Evan Pazner. Sonya was a student at Interplay Jazz several years ago. This experience helped to shape her sound and style. She will be teaching a singer / songwriter workshop Saturday July 2 10 AM- noon in Woodstock. Vocal Jazz & Gospel Concert featuring Karrin Allyson, John Proulx and the Interplay Gospel Choir Thursday, June 30 7:30 PM Woodstock Town Hall Theater The jazz scene is abuzz about two singer/pianist/composers John Proulx and Karrin Allyson. Both artists will be teaching at Interplay Jazz's weeklong workshop in Woodstock and will come together on the stage for a magical collaboration backed by Fred Haas and his team of talented Interplay musicians. Karrin Allyson (pronounced 'CAR-in') has spent the last fifteen years carving out an impressive career as a singer, songwriter, pianist, composer and bandleader. It's not just critics who love her, it's the rest of the world, too-musicians, concertgoers and connoisseurs of quality music. One thing's for certain though, the two-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated artist has been winning over fans and critics alike. And she's been doing so just about everywhere jazz can be heard or seen since 1992. That was the year Allyson assembled her Kansas City based rhythm section, borrowed funds from her family and headed into the studio. The result? I Didn't Know About You. The reaction was immediate. "Stunning debut! Irresistible twists of melody and inflection," wrote veteran jazz critic Neil Tesser in Playboy Magazine, placing the young singer in the company of legends Ella Fitzgerald and Shirley Horn. Critics and jazz lovers from coast to coast echoed the news. Allyson is a major talent that will drive you wild. Over the years, Karrin Allyson has recorded a series of twelve CDs for Concord Records, each of which have showcased her astonishing breadth of repertoire, from standards by Gershwin and Porter to Brazilian bossa nova to samba and Thelonious Monk. She has also taken on French and Brazilian music (From Paris to Rio), the genius of John Coltrane (Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane), the blues (In Blue) and Imagina: Songs of Brasil. Karrin Allyson spends two days out of three on the road, playing the major jazz festivals and clubs of the U.S. and making repeated tours overseas. John Proulx's (pronounced PRUE) piano playing is hot and swinging, and his voice recalls the smooth, mellow sounds of a young Chet Baker. John is also a Grammy-winning composer. Jazz legend, Nancy Wilson, recorded "These Golden Years", a song that John co-wrote with lyricist D. Channsin Berry, for her 2006 Grammy-winning CD, Turned to Blue. Recently John's musical path took him to New York where he's just completed a four month engagement at Feinstein's in Manhattan. He has emerged as a young talent on the Los Angeles jazz scene and loves the wide-range of opportunities the city has to offer. The concert will open with the Interplay Gospel Choir performing music that they will have worked on during the week with Dartmouth Gospel Choir director Walt Cunningham.
